| She just had to go to the bathroom. Seven years old and performing in a school play, all Christina remembers about the day she was discovered was "really having to go pee." But, a movie critic noticed more than a scared little girl locking her kneecaps together to prevent the most embarassing moment in her short seven years. The critic encourages Christina's folks (her father, a lawyer, and her mother, a mom) to get her an agent, and they soon did. As it turns out, it's a good thing that agent found her. "If I hadn't gone into acting, I would have been one of those weird runaways on Hollywood Boulevard. No, It'd be uglier. I'd probably be dead." Just one short year later, Christina was signed on to perform in "Mermaids" with Cher and Winona Ryder. The role of Wednesday in The Addams Family would follow, and finally Casper, the film that established her as a child star. The film was lambasted by critics, but alas, embraced by audiences. Christina had a few roles - in the touching tale of young girls becoming women in "Now and Then" and forgetable roles like "That Darn Cat." After The Addams Family, her parents divorced. Christina remains close with her mother, "We've gone through a lot of stuff, you know, and I think we're pretty close." However, since the divorce, Christina hasn't spoken with her father. Personal problems, contrived or real would plague her rise. She was often outspoken and her sarcasm often taken literally, leaving dastardly rumors. But there were real problems. "For years, I hated myself. I covered the mirrors in my house. I literally couldn't have a mirror in my room. I still can't sit in a restaurant or someplace where I can catch my reflection. I get so paranoid." Childhood would soon escape her, but unlike most child stars, Christina stepped up and made a name for herself completely separate of her kid roles. The Ice Storm, Ang Lee's powerful 70s drama, was the film that saw Christina grow up. She displayed her amazing ability in the critically acclaimed role of Wendy. But, before critics could write her out, Christina popped out three huge indie successes that dropped her on the list of 'A-List Hollywood Actresses': Pecker, The Opposite of Sex, and Buffalo '66. The Opposite of Sex received the most praise, as it was also Lisa Kudrow's (Friends) turn to step out and prove herself. One of the more interesting aspects of Ricci's careers is not what she's done, but what she hasn't done. She has been turned down for a roles in Jurassic Park, Little Women, Titanic (as Rose), Lolita (as Lolita), Batman & Robin, and Romeo + Juliet (as Juliet). Off the screen, Christina's best friend is "Now and Then" costar Gaby Hoffman. She is currently living with boyfriend Matthew Frauman. She works on the national board of VOX-Voices for Planned Parenthood, which works to promote the mission of Planned Parenthood to young adults. She will also be appearing in national ads for Emergency Contraception. |
