| Beautiful, patrician blond actress who, after a career as a model (beginning in her teens) was spotted on a magazine cover by director Peter Bogdanovich and cast as the town tease in his landmark film, The Last Picture Show (1971). She found another ideal role the following year, as the "ultimate shiksa" in The Heartbreak Kid (1972), but Bogdanovich's infatuation with her caused him to star her in movies that were beyond her reach-the costume drama Daisy Miller (1974) and the elephantine musical At Long Last Love (1975)-which nearly spelled an end to both their careers. She acquitted herself well in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976), but after a series of flops, including Special Delivery (1976), Silver Bears (1978), and an embarrassing remake of Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1979), she left show business and moved back to Tennessee. In 1983 she tested for and won the leading role in a short-lived Western TV series, "The Yellow Rose," revealing a worldliness she'd never projected before onscreen. On the strength of that work, she was signed for the lead in the lighthearted comedy-mystery series "Moonlighting" (1985-89), her best vehicle to date. She's appeared since then in a handful of theatrical films, including the underrated romantic comedy Chances Are (1989), Texasville (1990, a sequel to The Last Picture Show), Alice (1990), and Married to It (1993), but has fared better on TV, where she's starred in such telefilms as Memphis (1992), which she also cowrote and executive-produced, and the aptly named sitcom "Cybill" (1995-). |
