Biography
Former model who could be one of the premier leading ladies of the 1990s, especially if she gets scripts tailored to her distinctive Noo Yawk persona. Tall, sharp-featured, and harshvoiced (with a pronounced Brooklyn accent), Bracco is particularly effective as strong-willed, sassy urban types. She made her screen debut in the French-made Duos sur Canape (1979, when she was working for Radio Luxembourg) and appeared in a couple of other European productions. American audiences first noticed her as the beleagured wife of middle-class cop Tom Berenger in Someone to Watch Over Me (1987). Roles in The Pick-up Artist (1987), The Dream Team and Sing (both 1989) gave Bracco additional screen experience but little else. Her brilliant portrayal of Mafia wife Karen Hill in Martin Scorsese's GoodFellas (1990), a characterization for which her New Yorker's aggressiveness and accent were perfectly suited, elevated Bracco to the upper ranks of movie actresses (and earned her an Oscar nomination). Subsequent assignments in Switch, Talent for the Game (both 1991), and three 1992 releases-Radio Flyer, Medicine Man and the steamy Traces of Red-didn't utilize her talents nearly as well. Formerly married to actor Harvey Keitel.
