| Pouty redhead who endeared herself to movie audiences in several "Brat Pack" films written by John Hughes: Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Pretty in Pink (1986). Ringwald has shown real ability and forthrightness, beginning with her debut performance in Tempest (1982), and continuing right on through Betsy's Wedding (1990). Hughes wrote the part that, to date, has best suited her: the lowerclass daughter of Harry Dean Stanton who simultaneously anticipates and dreads her date with one of her better-heeled classmates in Pretty in Pink. She made the cover of "Time" magazine, and was emblematic of a new generation on screen; then her career fizzled. Bad choices and bad luck seem to have conspired against this once promising young talent. Her most recent credits have been telefilms and miniseries, including Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994). She's the daughter of blind jazz musician Bob Ringwald, with whom she was performing while still a preschooler. |
